An extension was added to the rear of the library to house the collection. Since then, the Monsignor has continued to add to the collection and it now has over 6,000 items.
The collection is of major significance with some truly fascinating and remarkable titles. It includes facsimiles editions of rare Irish manuscripts and annals, sets of learned journals, Irish dictionaries from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and Greek readers that once belonged to Éamon De Valera.
A wide and varied selection of subjects are covered including Irish literature, the Irish language, local history, archaeology, religion, hagiography, folklore, art, poetry and history. The books are in English, Irish, Latin, Welsh, Breton, Russian, German, French, Greek, Spanish, there are even some titles in Korean and Japanese.
Library staff have recently concluded a comprehensive reorganisation and reclassification of the collection, to make it more accessible to library users and to make it easier to search for items on the online library catalogue.
The collection is a reflection of the depth of knowledge and many interests of Monsignor Ó Fiannachta. It is an extremely generous gift to all the people of Corca Dhuibhne and Dingle. Leabharlann An Daingin is privileged to provide access to this veritable Aladdin’s Cave for scholars, historians, folklorists, linguists or simply anybody with a passion for knowledge and discovery.
