Volunteering in Haiti

Written by  Jamie Flannery

UCD Volunteers Overseas is a charitable organisation which offers students, staff and graduates of University College Dublin the opportunity to engage in voluntary work in developing countries.

UCD Volunteers Overseas currently have projects in India, Haiti, Nicaragua, Tanzania and Uganda and work alongside local communities in carrying out small-scale development projects which respond to local needs. I decided to apply back in November and I chose Haiti because I felt that teaching children, construction work and teaching computers would enable me to use as much of my own skills to ensure the community in Haiti would benefit.  After months of preparing through team building weekends, language classes, culture workshops and
fundraising activities I was about to embark on a journey which was only ever a long life ambition until this year. Myself and 24 other
volunteers from all around Ireland left on Saturday the 28th of June and after 2 days of travelling we arrived into Port au Prince to be welcomed by our team leader. I spent the next four weeks teaching in a primary school in Bigue which is located in the town of Gros Morne teaching English, maths, geography and art. By the end of the project we had successfully constructed two classrooms and taught 22 teachers the basic skills needed for using a computer. I would like to say thanks a
million to everyone who helped me reach my fundraising target to travel with UCDVO to Haiti.
It was such an amazing experience and one I will never forget.
