Dog Grooming: The Big Moult -Lynne Stratton

Written by

It’s that time of the year again, the days are warming up and the fur is coming out in handfuls. Dogs naturally shed their fur twice a year, now, to get rid of their thick winter coats and again in the Autumn to make way for that thick coat to grow back. But quite often they will hang onto the fur especially if they are wooly or have long fur, so you need to give them a helping hand with a good brush. Short furred dogs moult just as much as long furred dogs although it’s not as noticeable on the dog itself. I have Black Labradors and Whippets and I get tons of fur out of them, and remember the more that gets brushed out the less hoovering you have to do!

It’s also that time of the year for ticks and fleas and they love to get into that nice loose warm fur, so once your dog has had that good spring groom get some parasite drops / spray to put on the coat and worm your dog while you’re at it.

Hopefully we will have a good Summer so there will be lots of dog walking on the beach, so it is worth remembering to rinse off your dog’s underside with a hose every now and then because when the coat dries after being in the sea the salt can iritate the skin. Dogs with hairy feet can also get a build up of sand caught in their fur between the pads which hardens and can cause sores, so check the feet occasionally.

Happy grooming and if you need a hand call me, Lynne at Muddy Matters Dog Grooming.
