Sixty five years ago, in July 1947, the Taoiseach of the day, Mr. Éamon de Valera, landed on the Great Blasket, from the navy ship ‘Macha’, to attend to numerous pleas he had received from the islanders regarding their dire situation.
Here we publish an extract from Mícheál de Mórdha’s new book ‘Scéal agus Dán Oileáin’, (Coiscéim, Dublin), which deals with the lead up to Dev’s visit.
We’ll publish another extract in the next issue of WKL, which deals in detail with the Taoiseach’s visit to Great Blasket.
