Cliúsaíocht as Gaeilge
Making Out in Irish
aistriúchán le
Rossa Ó Snodaigh
foilsithe ag Coiscéim
‘Leabhar é seo atá lán de nathanna luachmhara atá riachtanach más mian leat Gaeilge a labhairt is tú ag bualadh le daoine nó ag bualadh leathair leo. Clúdaíonn sé chuile ní ó chaochadh súile le duine istoíche go hoscailt do shúile is iad farat ar maidin. Ní bheidh tú gann ar fhocal in am an ghátair arís.’
‘Is ceoltóir é Rossa Ó Snodaigh leis an mbuíon cheoil Kila atá ag seinm le chéile ó 1987. Tógadh le Gaeilge é i mBaile Átha Cliath agus d’fhreastail ar Scoil Lorcáin agus Coláiste Eoin.’

An Cnósach Duibhneach
Rugadh An Seabhac, Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha, i mBaile An Ghóilín, trí mhíle siar ón Daingean ar 10 Márta 1883.” Údar, múinteoir, riarthóir poiblí, béaloideasóir, scoláire, ceoltóir, fear gnó, díograiseoir, fear troda agus fear na síochána” de réir cur síos amháin air agus d’fhág sé bailiúchán de leabhair agus lámhscríbhinní a bhain le Corca Dhuibhne agus Ciarraí le huacht ag Leabharlann An Daingin.
This generous bequest formed the nucleus of An Cnósach Duibhneach – the Local studies collection. An Seabhac stipulated that the library should continue to add to his collection – a copy of every book published relating to Corca Dhuibhne, its’ people and its’ language agus a gnéithe éagsúla ar fad. An Cnósach Duibhneach has grown and now includes over 900 items and counting.
Má tá tú ag cuardach aon rud a bhaineann leis an leithinis seo, gheobhaidh tú sa Chnósach é. It is a truly fascinating and extensive collection of books and articles relating to the Dingle Peninsula including local folklore, geology, archaeology, genealogy, history, poetry, music and fiction.
Seo thíos samplaí beaga an Chnosaigh
• An account of a ‘Sea monster’ captured in Dingle in 1673,
• Slater’s Commercial Directory from 1856 listing all
the businesses in Dingle from that year.
• A list of the fishing boats operating from Dingle Pier between 1890-1910
• The book Tomás Ághas was reading in Mountjoy Jail before his death in 1917, signed by his fellow
prisoners.
• Triocha Céad Chorca Dhuibhne, (i mo thuairim féin ceann de na leabhar is tabhachtaí, suimúla agus starúla sa bhailiúchán ar fad) “ tiomargadh ar a log-ainmneacha agus ar sheanchas a ghabhann leo san mar aon le sloinnte agus ainmneacha daoine”
Is féidir leat níthe ón Chnósach a léamh istigh sa Leabharlann amháin. Níl siad le fáil ar iasacht ginearálta.
It is rare for such a collection to be available to the public in a small branch library like Dingle. It is a wonderful asset for both muintir na háite agus Contae Chiarraí ar fad. It can be a marvellous research resource for students, writers, historians, travellers, sailors, people tracing their family history and indeed for anybody with a grá or interest in the past, present and future life of Corca Dhuibhne.
Tabhair faoi deara le do thoil go bhfuil an seirbhís fótachoipeála le fáil i mbrainsí Leabharlann Chiarraí i gcomhair ábhair leabharlainne amháin.
Please note that the photocopying service in Kerry Library branches is for copying library material only.
Go dti an chéad uair eile, na dean dearúd….Lig do scíth le Leabharlann Chiarrai.

Pregnancy Related Dismissals Not Tolerated By Equality Tribunal … Aileen Garvey investigates…

Pregnancy Related
Dismissals Not Tolerated By Equality Tribunal …
Aileen Garvey investigates…
The Equality Tribunal recently awarded more than €28,000 to an employee for harassment and discriminatory dismissal on grounds of pregnancy, contrary to employment equality legislation. The employee had only been employed for 3 months. In making the award, the Equality Officer noted that the period of pregnancy and maternity leave constitutes a protected period and quoted the Labour Court as saying that ‘no employee can be dismissed while they are pregnant unless there are exceptional circumstances’. This is not to say that a pregnant person can never be dismissed. However, employers should take legal advice, at an early stage, in relation to terminating an employee where equality related issues may arise.
