Dismissals Not Tolerated By Equality Tribunal …
Aileen Garvey investigates…
The Equality Tribunal recently awarded more than €28,000 to an employee for harassment and discriminatory dismissal on grounds of pregnancy, contrary to employment equality legislation. The employee had only been employed for 3 months. In making the award, the Equality Officer noted that the period of pregnancy and maternity leave constitutes a protected period and quoted the Labour Court as saying that ‘no employee can be dismissed while they are pregnant unless there are exceptional circumstances’. This is not to say that a pregnant person can never be dismissed. However, employers should take legal advice, at an early stage, in relation to terminating an employee where equality related issues may arise.

Ó Bhéal an Bhab cnuas-scéalta Bhab Feiritéar le Cáit Feiritéar ‘An Bhab’ foilsithe ag Cló Iar-Chonnacht Seo leabhar a foilsíodh in 2002 ach a bhí as cló le tamall. Tá sé ar fáil anois arís leis an dá dhlúthdhiosca. ‘Ardscéalaí agus duine de na scéalaithe ab fhearr in Éirinn ab ea Bab Feiritéar ó Bhaile na hAbha i nDún Chaoin, Contae Chiarraí. Mheabhraigh sí riar maith dá stór scéalta óna muintir roimpi a fáisceadh as bráca an Drochshaoil. Dar ndóigh, buaileann Bab a cló féin go healaíonta ar gach insint dá cuid. Is é atá anseo, breis is dhá uair an chloig scéaltóireachta de scothscéalta An Bhab, idir ghuth is théacs. Tá raon leathan ábhar sna naoi scéal déag uaithi: seanscéalta iontais, scéalta cráifeacha, finscéalta ar an osnádúr, rannscéalta agus scéalta grinn, agus iad uile inste go beodhúil líofa aici. Tá tuairisc fhéinbheathaisnéiseach léi ann chomh maith.’ - Cló Iar-Chonnacht An Café Liteartha

What is Green-Schools?
There are now 3564 schools in Ireland registered with the Green-Schools Programme of An Taisce which represents over 83% of all schools in Ireland. Of these, 2306 schools are flying the Green Flag. In the Dingle area there are 6 schools registered with the Programme with 2 schools having been recently awarded: Bunscoil an Chlochair received their 2nd Green Flag for the Energy Theme and Scoil Iognaid Ris received their 4th Green Flag for the Travel Theme.
The Irish Green-Schools programme is one of the most succesful within the international network. One of the main factors in the success of the Irish Green-Schools programme is the partnership between the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce and Local Authorities i.e. the financial and time contribution of the Local Authorities to the programme. Most of the Local Authorities (City & County Coucils) have an Environmental Education Officer (EEO). These officers provide the invaluable on the ground support to schools undertaking the programme.
Green-Schools is a themed programme with schools initially focussing on the theme of Litter & Waste, and working through the seven steps for this theme and applying for the Green-Flag. Once successful, the school moves onto the Energy theme, and then onto the Water theme. This links very well with the renewal of the award every two years
