This lecture will show how plants have been used in virtually every aspect of human life in Ireland: food, clothes, medicine, construction, drinks, veterinary medicine, human health and beauty, and even death. It will blend scientific and historic facts with myths, superstition and tales will offer an unrivalled account of the rich heritage of Irish plants.

Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson is author of 'Ireland’s Generous Nature', the first ever comprehensive account of the historical and present-day uses of wild plant species in Ireland.  It records a wealth of traditional knowledge about Irish plant use, knowledge that has been disappearing fast.  More than 1500 wild plants are detailed in a systematic list, which gives both their Irish and English names.  Many historical references have been included from a wide range of Irish literature, including the Blasket library and other West Kerry sources. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, as well as botanical paintings by Irish artist Lydia Shackleton.

Dr. Wyse Jackson is President and Director of the Missouri Botanical Garden in St Louis and George Engelmann Professor of Botany at Washington University, St Louis. He formerly held positions as Secretary General of Botanic Gardens Conservation International, based at Kew in London, and as the Director of the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Ireland.

Cuirfidh an léacht seo síos ar na slite ina mbíodh plandaí á n-úsáid i ngach uile réimse de shaol na ndaoine in Éirinn: bia, éadaí, leigheas, tógáil, deochanna, tréidliacht, leigheas agus smidiú daonna, agus go deimhin i gcúrsaí an bháis. Beidh meascán de fhíricí eolaíochta agus stairiúla maraon le miotais, nósanna agus piseoga á chur i láthair agus tabharfar léargas iontach ar oidhreacht shaibhir ár bplandaí.

Is é an Dr. Peter Wyse-Jackson údar 'Ireland's Generous Nature', an chéad saothar cuimsitheach ar úsáid phlandaí stairiúla na hÉireann. Cuireann an leabhar síos ar iliomad cineál eolais traidisiúnta ar úsáid phlandaí, eolais atá á gcailliúint againn go tapaigh. Cuirtear síos ar ós cionn 1500 planda, lena n-ainmneacha Gaelainne & Béarla. Tá tagairtí sa leabhar ó réimse leathan foinsí liteartha, leabhair an Bhlascaoid agus foinsí eile ó Chorca Dhuibhne ina measc. Tá iliomad grianghraf sa leabhar, maraon le saothair péinteála le Lydia Shackleton.

Tá An Dr. Wyse Jackson ina Uachtarán agus ina Stiúrthóir ar Gharraithe Lus Missouri i St. Louis agus George Engelmann Professor of Botany in Ollscoil Washington, St. Louis. Roimhe seo bhí sé ina Rúnaí Ginearálta ar Botanic Gardens Conservation International, i Kew Londain, agus ina Stiúrthóir ar Gharraithe Lus na hÉireann i nGlasnaíon.
